American Black Walnut

These blocks are cut a little different than most. They are 15/16" thick by 2" wide by over 5" long. You will find a lot of burl type figure in these. In the picture shown, I sprayed them with a light coat of Tru-Oil(tm) to try and show the chatoyance of the wood but failed. Chatoyance is the quality of a wood that allows you see into the wood and see the 3D look of the grain and figure. A good application of tung oil will allow you to see this figure.
American Black Walnut is often used on high end shotgun stocks. It is dense, heavy, porous wood that really soaks up the stabilizing chemical. After stabilizing it ends up even more dense. Still, this is Walnut and will benefit by using a wood filler when finishing by hand. This is typical of finishing all Walnut woods with the large wood pores it tends to have. Alternatively, you can wet sand using tung oil and let the sanding dust fill the pores - which is what I do.
We are in southern Minnesota and have massive Black Walnut trees in the area. This was harvest locally some time ago. I think you will like it.
