These buffalo bone scales are massive with plenty of meat for shaping. The back side porous pith has been removed and replaced with a mix of bone dust and synthetic filler. This makes the scale even stronger than it would be naturally.
These are impressive scales. The tops have a nice radius and have been polished to a smooth, shiny surface.
Tip: Dye this with shoe polish for a nice affect. Using blue, green, yellow and brown color dyes, you can get material that looks quite a bit like mammoth ivory at a 1/5th of the cost.
Tip: Any time you are grinding bone, use a fresh sharp belt. You want to keep the heat down to a minimum. If you can't touch it to your lip with out burning it, you have it too hot. Bone or horn material bends and curls when to hot. You can't get this stuff flat when it is hot.
