Greaseless Compound

Greaseless compound is applied to sewn or loose buffs while moist. It is left to harden and forms a 'head' on the buff wheel. This buff wheel is now an abrasive wheel that rapidly (grit dependent) removes metal or gives a finish to the metal.

Greaseless compound is often used to deburr, remove rust, break hard edges and sharpen knives. This use really cleans up rough metal quickly and at a much lower cost than abrasive belts.

Tip: Use a dedicated buff wheel for each grit. This keeps errant scratches from showing up. Keep any tubes refrigerated if possible for longer shelf life.

Tip: Use a metal wheel rake to occasionally break up and remove old coating 'heads' and apply a new fresh coat. Applying a new coat on buff wheels is normally one of the last things done when leaving the shop or the very thing done when entering the shop. This gives it time to dry.

Tip: If you have always used grease (or wax) based buff compounds, give this material a try. It really moves metal and can quickly shape and polish a blade.
