This is a self contained ferro rod fire starter. The hardened steel scraper is built into the handle. Pressing on the steel scraper with your thumb while pushing down on the spring loaded ferro rod throws off a massive shower of sparks. I tested it on the notebook on me desk and immediately started a fire. Ouch!  I was swatting sparks and fire until I put it out. Not a good example for my 16 year old son sitting next to me. It really works as I can personally vouch for it.
