This has a ferro rod with the striker on a nylon cord. The ferro rod has been glued into a groove on the Magnesium rod. Normally the ferro rod would spark enough to start any fire. If you have really wet tinder, shave some of the magnesium into a pile and spark it with the ferro rod. The magnesium burns so hot it will ignite nearly anything.
The striker is made with hardened steel and has 4 sharp edges to pull a huge spark from the ferro rod.
