This is a high quality Nicholson mill file. The smooth cut gives a finer finish than the bastard cut. The advantage to a smooth cut is the file leaves a finer finish on the metal. The Bastard cut file removes metal faster but leaves a slightly rougher finish. There is a use for both in your tool assortment.

Tip: A golf ball makes a great file handle. Drill a hole in the ball and epoxy the file tang end into the ball.
