Desert Ironwood

  •   5"x 1.75" x 1.25" Block

We made a large purchase of this Ironwood in both blocks and scales.

This is not classed as burl but may have some burl figure. I have pictured some random examples of the blocks I pulled from the stock. At this price, we won't be showing pictures of each block.
If you have a preference for high contrast bold stripes or fine grain figure, simply let us know when you check out and we will try and pull from stock to match your request.

As with all of our wood, if you aren't satisfied when you receive it, return it.

Tip: Ironwood does not need to be stabilized. It is a very stable product. It is dense, heavy and hard. You will probably see sparks fly off it when you cut it! This is from the minerals in the material. I normally take Ironwood to a 400 or 600 grit finish. When I've done sanding, I coat it with Danish Oil (which is mostly tung oil with evaporants to help it dry faster) for 30 minutes until it stops soaking up the oil. Wipe it and let it dry. Then buff it with white buff compound or even a dry buff. I usually wax it when I buff it.

The Danish oil adds transparency called chatoyance to the wood. You can actually see into the wood. This gives it a 3D look when you move it around. The buffing closes up any open grains and the wax add a very nice shine and luster to the finish.

Poll after poll among knife makers singles out Ironwood as the single favorite natural handle material for knives.

NOTE: The picture is representative but not exactly the pieces you will receive.
