Latrobe 14-4CrMo Steel

TIP: Latrobe's 14-4CrMo is an improved 440C type steel. 440C is a great steel for knives with good edge holding, great corrosion resistance and decent toughness. You might have seen criticism of 440A and 440B steels used in knives for it's edge holding. Don't confuse 440C with lower quality (cheaper) 440A or 440B. It's good stuff. It has been around a long time and is a proven knife steel. It is easy to heat treat and generally won't stain. It can get edge chippy over 60RC so keep it to 59RC or lower unless you have a special application.

Latrobe's composition is:
C: 1.05%  Carbon
Mn: .50%
Si: .30%  Silicon
Cr:14.00% Chromium. 12% is generally the minimum for steel to be "stainless"
Mo:4.00% Molybdenum

The simple recipe for heat treat:
Heat to 1950F and soak for 20 minutes.
Quench. In Oil, look for 63RC, with a plate quench 62RC
Cryo for 8 hours in Liquid Nitrogen. RC should go up a point and half on the average.
Temper twice for 2 hours at 450F to achieve approximately 59RC

See the Latrobe data sheet for more detailed heat treating information:
