BG42 is a steel used most often in the aerospace industry. Looking at the composition you will see it is very close to 440C with some Vanadium thrown in. But that touch of Vanadium makes a big difference in performance. Vanadium promotes hard carbide formation in the steel and improves the wear resistance. This steel will hold an edge a lot longer than 440C and is quite a bit tougher. This steel makes for a great hunting knife. It is an "upgrade" to 440C.

Ron Lovelass made this steel popular when he switched from 154CM to BG-42 for his famous 4" hunter. Supply is often erratic as the smelts are driven by the aerospace industry and the cutlery industry is left to pick up what is left over.

This steel will take a very sharp edge and hold it.

This steel is expensive for a couple reasons. One reason is scarce supply, the other is the smelting process it's self. It is double smelted for purity to meet the very high standards of the aerospace industry. If you are looking for high performance steel with some name recognition, this could be it. Don't underestimate the power of marketing with a well known 'snob' steel!

Heat treating calls for 2050F and that is a bit of a stretch for most home ovens. It can be done, I just don't like to push my oven that hard. I have treated some of this on my own but I prefer to send it off to some one like Paul Bos at Buck Knives for heat treating.
