Magnesium Rod 3" x 1/2" for fire starting

We had these custom made for us. These are pure magnesium rods 3" long by 1/2" diameter with a 3/16" lanyard hole. Use these along with Ferro rods or other flint type rods to get a fire going. These are very light at just under 1oz each.

Using for fire starting: Magnesium burns with a very hot flame once ignited. It will be nearly impossible to extinguish once ignited so be careful. Shave thin strips or dust from the rod. More is better. The metal is fairly soft but you should expect it will take a minute or two to shave enough off the mag rod to build up a little pile. Place the shavings into your tinder material and shoot sparks from your ferro rod into the magnesium pile. A hot spark from the ferro rod into the mag rod pile of dust and shavings should ignite the magnesium. These shavings will burn very hot and quite a bit longer than the ferro rod spark. In practice, try starting your fire with the ferro rod first. If that doesn't work because your tinder is damp or it's too windy, then shave off some magnesium and try again. Like any other survival skill, you should practice fire starting at home before you need it the wild. Using magnesium as a fire starting material takes a little practice.
