Magnesium Rod with Ferro Rod
  • 3" long Mag rod 1/2" diameter
  • 2.5" long Ferro Rod 3/16" diameter
  • Industrial adhesive bonded

I had these Mag rods made especially for us to have a 3/16" milled groove. This allows us to bond a 3/16" ferro rod using industrial adhesive. The Mag rod and Ferro rods are 3" long. The mag rod has a lanyard hole and the hole edges have even been chamfered so your lanyard doesn't cut through. You will need a hard steel striker for the ferro rod and a knife to scrape magnesium shavings.

Tip: In most cases you won't even need to scrape the magnesium as the ferro rod throws some pretty hot sparks. This solid magnesium and not bonded magnesium dust you find in some mag blocks. Magnesium in use like this doesn't burst into flames. It will catch and then glow very hot and spread through the shavings burning (or igniting) what ever else it is in contact with until it is consumed. You will need to make a decent sized pile. At least the size of an eraser tip on a pencil. Be patient. It will take a few minutes of scraping to build up a pile of mag dust and shavings. You aren't whittling a stick. This is metal and even if it is soft, it will take a few minutes to gather enough shavings. You should practice a few times at home and get comfortable learning to start fires with your ferro and mag rods. There is a learning curve but it isn't that big of one. Better to learn in your own yard than in hostile survival and camping conditions.
