You have seen white paint writing on knife steel. This is what the pro's use. It has a roller ball tip and is 3/16" thick lines in white.  This paint doesn't fade. Buying one tube now and marking your steel may save you hundreds of dollars later. Very handy. Very easy to to not appreciate until you come up with your first mystery piece of steel!

Tip: Like most knife makers, you probably have multiple types of steel and getting them mixed up is a disaster. Permanent markers fade over time leaving you with an expensive piece of mystery steel. Mark your steel every time immediately when it comes in. I have had to throw an insane amount of steel into the unknown pile because I could not be exactly sure what type it was. Now I mark every piece multiple times in case I cut off one ID notation, there will be another.
